I absolutely love networking. I know that word can feel a little stiff or transactional, but the way I experience it is anything but.

To me, it's like an energetic switchboard — plugging the right question into the right answer, the right need into the right resource, the right person into the right community. There's something almost magical about it when it flows.

Connection is currency

We are wired for connection. Research in Positive Psychology consistently shows that the quality of our relationships is one of the strongest predictors of happiness and wellbeing — more than wealth, status, or achievement.

And yet so many of us move through life in relative isolation, not because we don't want connection, but because we haven't created the conditions for it to happen naturally.

Networking — real networking, the kind rooted in genuine curiosity and care — is one of those conditions.

Recently I was at a gathering and someone mentioned they were struggling to find a good accountant who understood creative businesses. Within minutes, three people in the room had offered names, referrals, and personal recommendations.

That's the switchboard lighting up. That's community doing what it does best.

But here's what I've noticed: the people who benefit most from these moments are the ones who show up openly. They're willing to say what they need. They're willing to share what they know. They're not hoarding their contacts or their knowledge — they're circulating it.

How to be a great connector

• Ask genuine questions and actually listen to the answers
• Share your own needs without embarrassment — people love to help
• Make introductions freely when you see a match
• Follow up — a quick message goes a long way
• Show up consistently, not just when you need something
